The Formation of Turkey is the translation of the late Professor Claude Cahen's La Turquie Pre-Ottomane. Based upon a profound knowledge of the source materials, Oriental, Greek and Western, it provides a detailed narrative of the rise and apogee of the Seljukid sultanate of Rum.
The Formation of Turkey presents in appropriate detail the social, institutional, economic and cultural history of the Seljukid sultanate: the whole work presents a unique and comprehensive survey of the formation of Turkey before the Ottomans. It will be essential reading for students of Turkish history, and a most valuable introduction for historians approaching the subject from other fields.
Professor Claude Cahen was one of the foremost French scholars in the field of Muslim Near Eastern history. P. M. Holt, the translator of Cahen's book, has also lightly edited it for this readership and is Emeritus Professor of the History of the Near and Middle East, School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and General Editor of the series A History of the Near East.
THE ROYAL PALACE OF SEVILLE
The Royal Palace (Real Alcazar) of Seville is one of Europe's oldest preserved royal palaces. It is not one single palace, but rather comprises several buildings constructed at different times. In the ninth century work was started on constructing a military fortress but, subsequently, under the caliphate of Abd al-Rahman II, the building was turned into a residence. In the eleventh century, under the poet-king Al-Mutamid's direction, the building was considerably enlarged and embellished. Between 1364 and 1366 King Pedro I of Castille, who was keen to utilise existing buildings, had a magnificent palace erected. Christian artists, Mudejars from Seville and Toledo, as well as Muslims from Granada, all contributed to its construction. Today it is by far the finest example of Mudejar civil architecture in Spain.
Following a brief historical survey, the authors take us on a guided tour of the palace complex; they describe the architectural styles and ornate interior decoration of the main rooms, and the transformation of the interiors through the ages. The tour concludes with a walk through the Alcazar garden, with its beautiful ponds and fountains, grottos and amazing vegetation.
With its entertaining text and sumptuous colour photography, this guide captures the exotic nature of the palace and the artistic fluidity of the architecture and decoration in Spain during this period.

The post September 11 era has produced the most powerful and the most brutal military alliance the world has ever seen. The only blessing amid the horrors perpetrated by the Coalition against “terror” is the exposure of an intellectual alliance behind it. This alliance is comprised mainly of political analysts, who profess devotion to “objectivity,” but are self-deluded victims of a curiously inverted “subjectivity,” indulging in an intolerant zeal for “tolerance,” a passionate attack on passion, and a bigoted denunciation of “bigotry.” “Objectivity” is being confounded with ideological preference and the “objective” ideologues demand Muslims’ conformity to their notion of reality – or what ought to be the state of Muslim societies. I found this book to be a quick review of the intellectual horrors perpetrated by the media and press in the western world. It also reviews the major reasons that make the US-led war on terror doubtful and underlines the response needed on the part of the western public as well as the oppressed Muslims both in occupied and so-called independent Muslim states.
