11641. An Introduction to the Burdah-Cassette
By Al-Busiri

The Burdah - translated as Poem of the Mantle - by Al-Busiri is considered by many as the best poem about the Prophet Muhammad (saw). Designed to instill and fortify one's love of the Prophet (saw), its mere reading is widely believed to be efficacious. This beautiful rendition by Khalid Belrhouzi is both powerful and moving, and is complimented well with excerpts by Yusuf Islam in English. The popularity of the Burdah among scholars and laymen alike derives from the complex and brilliant use of the Arabic language, the author's deep love of the Prophet (saw), and also from the fact that poetry in his praise is a cultural practice followed with great literary success since the dawn of Islam itself. During the lifetime of the Prophet (saw), poets celebrated his glories, using eulogies that, thanks to the special rules that apply to Arabic poetry, might sound extravagant if expressed in prose. The leading poet among the Companions was Hassan ibn Thabit, whose work is closely echoed in Busiri's ode. Here are the words of Hassan, in his funeral elegy in which he addresses the Blessed Prophet (saw): He was the light and the brilliance we followed, He was sight and hearing second only to Allah. By Allah, no woman has conceived and given birth To one like the Messenger, the Prophet and Guide of his people; Nor has Allah created among His creatures, One more faithful to his sojourner or his promise Than he who was the source of our light, Blessed in his deeds, just, an...read more

11645. Imaginal Worlds
By William Chittick

Ibn al-`Arabl was thoroughly versed in the dry ratiocination of the contemporary doctors of- theology. but lie avoided their methodological approach. He was more likely to rely on images, symbols, analogies, and allegories derived primarily from "openings" and "tasting" and deeply rooted in the Koran and the Sayings of Muhammad. He constantly returns to one basic them: All things are intimately interrelated through their common roots in the Divine Reality. The universe in its indefinite multiplicity is nothing bill the outward manifestation of God's names. which are the faces that God turns toward creation. The revealed names provide keys that unlock the floor to the invisible world. Everywhere we look we sec the propcrtics anti traces of the names within the created thin g s. l nique among creatures, human beings display the propcrtics of every name of God, because they alone were created in hod's Win and given dominion over all creatures. each of which manifests only some of God's names. But people cannot actualise the divine names unless they Follow the guidance revealed through the prophet Reason, even in the best of circumstances, provides insufficient knowledge of God. It allows people to understand that God is incomparable and forever unknowable, bill it can never tell them anything about His similarity and self disclosure in the macrocosm and microcosm. In contrast. revelation provides a balanced knowledge of God for it combines the declaration of incomparability tha...read more

11648. Islam & Religion of Life
By Abdul Wadod Shalabi

ISLAM • Religion of Life Abdul Wadod Shalabi Edited by A.H. Murad Islam, a word to conjure with: veiled women, the oil weapon, holy war. More than one thousand million human beings crammed together under one journalistic label. The unchanging, sensuous, puritanical east of Flaubert and Montesquieu, translated into the language of the media: a potent political weapon. A world of peoples, cultures, and dreams transmuted into an abstraction, an alien threat, a monolith. This book is written about Islam from within. It seeks to show something of the true nature of the faith, thereby challenging the accepted stereotypes which so badly compromise the present dialogue of civilizations. By explaining the significance of the formal practices and doctrines of the Islamic religion, it endeavors to build a bridge over what must be the deepest yet most irrational gulf ever to have cleaved apart two cultures. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Abdul Waded Shalabi is the author of over twenty books on all aspects of Islam. He combines a deep loyalty to his theological training at al-Azhar University, while having an acute understanding of the crisis of the modern world. His studies abroad, which earned him a doctorate from the University of Cambridge, and his prominent career in the Azhar hierarchy (he has been editor of itsjournal and deputy Shaykh of al-Azhar), have placed him in a unique position to distill and introduce Islam to multitudes raised in the West.

11649. Forbidden
By Muhammad Saaleh al-Munajjid

Al-Mubarramaat (the forbidden) are the limits of Allaah, (the Mighty and Magnificent): "These are the limits of Allaah, so do not approach them." Allaah has threatened whoever transgresses His limits and violates His sacraments stating (Glorified be He): "And whoever disobeys Allaah and His messenger and transgresses His limits - He will put him into the Fire to abide eternally therein, and he will have a humiliating punishment." It is obligatory to avoid al-mubarramaat in view of the saying of the Prophet: `And whatever I forbade you, then avoid it and whatever I enjoined upon you, then fulfill as much of it as you are able." I ask Allaah guidance, success, and observance of His limits for myself and for my Muslim brothers. I ask Him (Glorified be He) to help us avoid al-muharramaat and protect us from sins and evil deeds, Allaah is the best protector and He is the Most Merciful.

11650. The Islamic Will
By Aisha Bewley

If you want your wealth to be distributed in accordance with the Shari `a of Islam after your death, it is essential for you to leave a Will which is valid under English law and which expresses that wish. Malik related to me from Nafi` from `Abdullah ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "It is the duty of a Muslim who has anything to bequeath not to let two nights pass without writing a Will about it."

11651. Building Muslim Families
By Muhammad Abdul Bari

Building Muslim Families The family as an institution has lost its importance in the developed world. At the same time, the prevailing materialism in the educational system and the absence of strong community are problematic for Muslims. Muslim families now face many challenges, both internal and external, and holding the family together and raising children in Islam are becoming increasingly daunting tasks. Muslims seem ill-equipped to withstand the storm of secularism and materialism and increasing numbers of Muslims think their family bonding is slipping and they are 'losing' their children. However, the problem lies in a poor understanding of Islam and contemporary life and, in some cases, in apathy. The book addresses the issues of marriage and family in a holistic way from an Islamic perspective. It is the result of an oft-repeated on-line course on parenting offered by an Internetbased organisation, Witness Pioneer, and subsequently displayed on the Salaam web page. The Author Dr. Muhammad Abdul Bari is an educationalist with a PhD and PGCE from King's College London and a Management degree from the Open University. He has worked as an Air Force Officer, Researcher in Physics, Science Teacher and now as SEN Specialist in London and has broad experience in Da'wah and Youth and Community work, having held senior positions with organisations like the Muslim Council of Britain and the Islamic Forum Europe. 11654. Muslim Heritage
By Muhammad Ahsan

Muslim Heritage and the 21 st Century Muhammad Ahsan, a dedicated research scholar. has extensively published on social and economic issues particularly in relation to the Muslim world. His recent work focuses on globalisation and the Muslim world. The book in hand represents a significant contribution towards a better understanding of the Muslim world and its often overlooked Contribution to a range of sciences and academic disciplines. The timing of this publication is particularly pertinent when the doom-laden predictions of Samuel Huntington's The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order are beginning to be given greater credence. Muhammad Ahsan conveys a sense of rich cultural heritage within the Muslim world. Moreover, he also stresses the centrality within Islamic teaching of improving one's education. This book will be educational for Muslims and, particularly, non-Muslims alike. The aim of this work is to highlight the civilising advances that arose from the Muslim world. Hopefully, a greater awareness of this will lead to an increased understanding of the development of Muslim culture and the contribution it continues to make to patterns of global development.

11655. Healing with The Medicine Of The Prophet
By Imam Ibn Qayyim Al- Jauziyah

Healing with the Medicine of the Prophet is the panacea for those in search of good health. It is a magnificent work that is a treasure for every Muslim household. Although it was written by the author, Ibn Al-Qayyim, over six hundred and fifty years ago, it is an extremely timely work for our generation in which health and natural health care products have become an important aspect of the lives of so many. The author presents the guidance of the Prophet in dealing with a variety of health issues, including treatment of ailments and preventive remedies to keep the body fit. As the Qur'an and Sunnah (traditions of Muhammad ) are the main sources of the Islamic lifestyle, it only stands to reason that they should likewise be referred to in the matters of health and fitness. This is the approach taken by Ibn Al-Qayyim as he presents Verses of the Qur'an, and statements of the Prophet as his main reference in these issues of health and medicines. The final chapters of this work include an extremely beneficial glossary of remedies, herbs, foods and other natural substances that aid in the journey towards better health., Healing with the Medicine of the Prophet is an invaluable reference guide for the Muslims of every land and every generation. May Allah bestow His mercy and blessings upon the author, Ibn Al-Qayyim, for surely his work will be cherished throughout time.

11656. Islam, The West And The Challenges of Modernity
By Tariq Ramadan

click here for reviews  (1 review)

TARIQ RAMADAN teaches Philosophy and Islamic Studies at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). He has been engaged in the debate about the place and situation of Muslims in the West, and he regularly contributes to reflections on the 'awakening of Islam' in Muslim majority societies. Among his books are Les Musulmans dans-la laicite Responsibilites et droits dans les societes occidentales (1994), L'Islam et les Musulmans. grandeur et decadence (1995), De la souffrance; etudes nietzscheenne et islamique (1997), Au source du renouveau musulman; Cent ans de reformisme islamique (1998), and To Be a European Muslim (1999). Islam, the West and the Challenges of Modernity attempts to demonstrate, using sources which draw upon Islamic thought and civilisation, that Muslims have the means to respond to contemporary challenges without betraying their identity. The book argues that Muslims, nourished by their own points of reference, can approach the modern epoch by proposing a specific social, political and economic management that is linked to ethical values, a sense of finalities and spirituality. This still requires, however, that the Western interlocutors make a distinction between modernity and the ideology of modernism which tends to impose Westernisation. The latter, in its substance and other than in its well-intentioned discourse, does not admit the reality of the pluralism of civilisations, religions or cultures. THE ISLAMIC FOUNDATION is an educational and research orga...read more

11659. Islamic Commercial Law
By Mohammad Hashim Kamali

Islamic Commercial Law: An Analysis of Futures and Options focuses on options and futures as trading tools and explores their validity from an Islamic legal point of view. Futures and options are a completely new phenomenon, which has no parallel in Islamic commercial law. After reviewing the existing rules of Islamic law of contract and verifying their relevance or otherwise to futures trading, Professor M H Karnali advances a new perspective on the issue of futures and options based on an interpretation of the Qur'an and the Sunna, and referring to the principle of maslaha (consideration of public interest) as enshrined in the Shari ah. Islamic Commercial Law consists of three parts. Part One is devoted to the description of futures trading and the understanding of operational procedures of futures and futures markets. Part Two investigates the issue of permissibility of futures trading in Islamic law and the underlying questions of risk-taking and speculation, which are of central concern to the topic. Part Three is devoted to an analysis of options. This work will be of use to anyone working on Islamic law, comparative law or working in Islamic banking. Dr Mohammad Hashim Kamali is Professor of Law at the International Islamic University, Malaysia, where he has been teaching Islamic law and jurisprudence since 1985. 11660. The Fiqh of Medicine
By Ahmed Abdel Aziz Yacoub

The Fiqh of Medicine This book is based on the author's doctoral thesis, Responses in Islamic Jurisprudence to Developments in Medical Science. It examines some of the most burning issues of the last four decades of the twentieth century. He examines in depth a wide range of legal and moral aspects of responsibility and medical liability within the context of the Been of Islam, with particular reference to: euthanasia, prevention and termination of pregnancy, reproduction and cloning, and transplantation. What are the bases in fiqh that guide medical practitioners in their daily work as they avail themselves of the developments in medical science? Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz has provided the medical profession and fuqaha with what may well prove to be a standard reference. Ahmed Abdel Aziz Yacoub For more than a decade the author of this work, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz Yacoub, worked very hard in two different fields. First, as a specialist heart surgeon in the course of which he directly encountered problems associated with the development of medical science. Second, he embarked on the study of law as an undergraduate student at Cairo University (Khartoum Branch), and as a postgraduate student at the University of Khartoum at which he earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He then proceeded to study for a doctoral degree at the University of London, where his research and analysis of vast material on medical science and law earned him a PhD in jurisprudence, in July 2000.
