Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips was born in Jamaica, but grew up in Canada where he accepted Islaam in 1972. He completed a diploma in Arabic and a B.A. from the College of Islamic Disciplines (Usool ad-been) at the Islamic University of Madeenah in 1979. At the University of Riyadh., College of Education he completed an M.A. in Islamic Theology in 1985 and in the department of Islamic Studies at the University of Wales, U.K., he also completed a Ph.D. in Islamic Theology in 1994. He taught Islamic Education and Arabic in private schools in Riyadh for over ten years. Between 1992 and 1.994, Dr. Bilal Philips established and lectured in the graduate and undergraduate Departments of Islamic Studies in the College of Education of Shariff Kabunsua.n Islamic University in Cotabato City, Mindanao, Philippines. Since 1994 he has founded and directed the Islamic Information Center in Dubai, U.A.E. and the Department of Foreign Languages at Dar al Fatah Islamic Press in Sharjah, U.A.E. This is Book XII of Imam Ghazali's 'Ihya Ulum al-Din (Revival of the Religious Sciences), translated by the eloquent Muhtar Holland. Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali (450/1058-505/1111) is justly described as a "towering figure" in the history of Islam. He was born in the Iranian town of Tus, studied Islamic law and theology at the Seljuq college in Nishapur, and became a distinguished professor at the famous Nizamiyya University in Baghdad. Despite his glittering success, he was inwardly dissatisfied, so he abandoned his career for the life of hardship, abstinence and devotion to worship. During ten years of wandering, he experienced a spiritual transformation, in which the Truth came to him at last, as something received rather than acquired. Blessed with an inner certainty, he then applied his outstanding faculties and vast learning to the task of revitalizing the whole Islamic tradition. Mantiqu't-Tair is one of the masterpieces of Persian literature of which a complete and annotated translation into English is here presented for the first time as The Speech of the Birds. The text revolves around the decision of the birds of the world to seek out a king. Their debilitating doubts and fears, the knowing counsel of their leader the Hoopoe, and their choice of the Simurgh as king, is in reality an allegory of the spiritual path of Sufism with its demands, its hazards and its infinite rewards. The poem contains many admonitory anecdotes and exemplary stories, including numerous references to some of the early Muslim mystics such as Rabi'a al-Adawiyya, Abu Said ibn Abi'I-Khair, Mansur al-Hallaj and Shibli, amongst others. Brought up in a Sufi ambience, the author of this work, Faridu'd-Din Attar (1145-1221), was an apothecary who lived near Nishapur. Attar, whom legend describes as having taken to the Sufi path in earnest after he witnessed a dervish surrender his soul outside his shop, went on to become one of the most famous Sufi poets in history, best known for his classical work the Mantiqu't-Tair.
