2501. Stories of the Prophets
By Ibn Kathir

click here for reviews  (4 reviews)

In this book, the stories of the prophets have been compiled from 'Al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah' (The Beginning and the End) which is a great work of the famous Muslim exegete and historian Ibn Kathir and has a prominent place in the Islamic literature. The stories of the prophets and all the events in their lives have been supported by the Qur'anic Verses and the Sunnah (traditions) of the Prophet (S). Wherever it was necessary, other sources have also been reported for the sake of historical accounts, but on such places a comparative study has been made to prove the authenticity of the sources. Ibn Kathir has reproduced the views and interpretations of all the great exegetes of the Qur'an of his time. The systemic narratives of the Stories of the Prophets have been written in chronological order which renders a historical style to the book.

2502. GCSE Islam The Do-it-Yourself Guide
By Ruqaiyyah Waris Maqsood

click here for reviews  (1 review)

This project started from three origins. The Association of Muslim Researchers (AMR) launched a distance learning scheme to enable any interested student to gain the newly-created qualification of GCSE Islam (Edexcel 1478/9) by postal tuition. The UK Islamic Mission (UKIM) needed a book for use in their madrasahs which would enable their students to gain a state qualification as well as to continue their programme of Islamic Studies. The writer and teacher Ruqaiyyah Waris Maqsood retired from classroom teaching after 33 years at the `chalk face' but still had the urge to teach, plus the burning ambition to enable any interested Muslim to gain GCSE Islam, even if they were unable to study at school. As she had already written text books for GCSE, and been involved in updating the UKIM course-books for youngsters at the madrasahs, and had later agreed to be AMR's postal tutor; it seemed the obvious thing to make the `knowhow' available to the widest possible market. For the first time in UK it is now possible for a student to do GCSE Islam without any other world faith accompanying it; and for the first time it is possible to qualify by examination alone, without course-work handed in to a teacher over a two-year period. All you have to do is study the syllabus, get the. course-books, do the 'donkey-work'; then you can put in your entry for GCSE Islam, walk in, and do it. So the opportunity is now available to all - not only teenagers, of course, but any other person who ...read more

By Ahmed Deedat

By debator extraordinaire and founder of the Islamic Propogation Centre in South Africa, this book of Ahmed Deedat's is a collection of his most popular series of booklets on Islam and Christianity. While produced in an excellent low-key reference quality binding on the outside, the insides however retain the customary Deedat attention-grabbing look with bolds and capitals abounding on each page for emphasis. A truly unique book set from an equally one-of-a-kind persona

2505. A Sufi Saint of The Twentieth Century
By Martin Lings

Fairly often while I was talking quietly with the Shaykh, the name 'Allah' had cone to us form some remote corner of the zawiyah, uttered on one long drawn out vibrant note: 'A ...I...l...a...h!' It was like a cry of despair, a distraught supplication, and it came from some solitary cell-bound disciple, bent on meditation. The cry was usually repeated several times, and then all was silence once more. 'Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, ( ) Lord'. 'From the end of the earth will I cry unto Thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than 1'. These verses form thePsamls came to my mind. The supplication was really Just the same, the supreme cry to God of a soul in distress. I was not wrong, for later, when I asked the Shaykh what was the meaning of the cry, which we had just heard, he answered: 'It is a disciple asking God to help him in his meditation'. 'May I ask what is the purpose of his meditation'?' 'To achieve self-realisation in God'. 'Do aII the disciples succeed in doing this'?' 'No, it is seldom that anyone does. It is only possible for a very Few'. '"Then what happens to those who do not'? Are they not desperate'?' 'No: they always rise high enough to have at least inward Peace'. Inward Peace. That was the point he came back to most often and there lay, no doubt, the reason for his great influence. For what man does not aspire, in some way or other, to inward peace'? From the narrative of Dr. Mareel Garret ""The Gnosti...read more

2506. The Ordinances of Government
By Al-Mawardi

Abu al-Hasan al-Mawardi, the son of a rose-water merchant, lived in Basra from 974 to 1058 AD, a 'time of political turmoil. Despite ongoing disputes between the Abbasid caliphs and the military powers of the Shiite Buyids, al-Mawardi held the respect of both parties and was often called on to mediate between them. He served as a judge in several districts and was commended as a judge par excellence. He wrote on many subjects, including Qur'anic interpretations, religion, government, public and constitutional law, language, ethics and belles-lettres. The Ordinances of Government is believed to have been written under commission from one of the caliphs of Baghdad, as indicated in the author's preface. It has long been recognized as a classic in its field, much discussed by Arab authors and orientalists, quoted in courses on Islamic law and government. It contains insights into key issues of Islamic law, including the appointment of sovereigns, judges and military commanders, and their rights, responsibilities and duties; fighting apostates, insurgents and brigands; dividing the spoils of war; boundaries between countries, land reclamation and water supplies; land enclosure, tithes, taxes and alms; crimes and punishments; fornication, theft, drinking and adultery. Educated in Cairo, Dublin and the U.K., Professor Wafaa H. Wahba has followed an illustrious career teaching at different universities around the world. Professor Wahba is currently undertaking research in the U.S.A...read more

2507. Freedom of Expression in Islam
By Mohammad H Kamali

In recent years the subject of freedom of expression in Islam has become a topic of heated debate. Professor Mohammad Hashim Kamali’s Freedom of Expression in Islam offers the first and only detailed presentation in English of freedom of expression from both the legal and the moral perspectives of Islam. This is a pioneering work which provides a detailed examination of the affirmative evidence on the subject of freedom of expression found in sources of the Shariah’, as well as considering the limitations, whether moral, legal or theological that Islam imposes on the valid exercise of this freedom. In particular, the sophisticated and detailed treatment of the concepts of freedom to express an opinion, freedom to criticize and freedom of religion is an important contribution to scholarship in this area.

2510. Towards Understanding the Quran Vol: 9 (Tafhim al-Quran)
By Mawdudi Abul A'la

click here for reviews  (1 review)

This English rendering of "Tafhim al-Qur'an" aims to answer contemporary questions and make the Qur'an relevant to the concerns of the day. Each "surah" is prefaced by an account of the backgrounds and teachings. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. The problem is further complicated when our enemies operate in such a covert manner that we are unaware of their tactics and plan of attack. Such is the state of our daily confrontations with our greatest enemies: Shaytan (the devil) and our nafs (carnal desires). The War Within Our Hearts was written with the purpose of showing Muslim youth in the West that they are not alone in the problems they are facing today. As integration and assimilation to society is increasing within the Muslim community, youth are battling a variety of enemies that were not faced by their parents. By recognizing that these problems are not unique to an individual but are common place for Muslim youth today, this book will address certain issues which would have otherwise been avoided. Although this book does not necessarily provide answers to all issues, the goal of this book is to provide a platform for us to begin dialogue on these issues in order to get closer to our Creator.

2520. The Purification of Tawhid Tawheed from the Filth of Deviation
By al-Imam al-Amir Muhammad ibn Isma il al-Sana ani

In recent times, a deviation has appeared amongst some Muslim communities wherby they show veneration, to an extreme, of Muslims saints and rigghteous personages: they erect mausoleums on their graves, they go to them in times of need and adversity, they supplicate to them and they hold beliefs concerning them that border on the superstitious. Distressed at theis gross deviation, al-Sana ani penned this treatise expounding on the belief of Ahlu'l Sunnah in its pristine purity. The issues he tackled wher th concept of worship and grave-worship , supplcation to Allah, relying on Allah, relyoing on Allah and resorting to Him at times of need.
