Knowledge is to be sought for its implementation and to actualize one’s servitude to Allah, the Sublime, the Exalted. For this reason it precedes action. You begin with it so that actions, demonstrations of servitude, obedience, and all actions intended to draw closer to Allah can be upon light, beneficial knowledge, and a solid foundation derived from the book of Allah and the Sunnah of his Prophet (May the peace and blessings be upon him).

Imam an-Nawawi assembled his collection of forty-two ahadith together with the absolute minimum of fiqh and commentary necessary for people not to misunderstand their import. Ibn 'Uyaynah said, "Ahadith are misleading exept to those who have fiqh."

The doctrine and the practice of Islam are founded upon two essential basses: firstly the Holy Qur’an, and secondly the Sunnah or the saying and the action of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), as recorded in Tradition (Hadith) literature. Jewel of Guidance, is an ideal introduction to Hadith: compiled by a contemporary scholar, it contains a carefully-made selection of tradition from the two most authoritative collections, those of the 3rd/9th century scholars, the Imams Muslim and Bukhari.

The Prophet himself sent hundreds of letter. Many of them were very lengthy. containing the formulae fir prayers and worship. According to the Qur'an the Prophet's conduct and deeds should he followed by the community. I he 0111- om Itself demands a record of, credit transactions. Therefore. it looks as if' there were no general instructions not to record the ahadith. though it might have been explained by some of the scholars in this way. On the other hand there is clear evidence to shoe that the Prophet approved of' recording uhullilh. Further. vv-r find that dente a number of companions recorded hadith and among them were those people who were responsible for transmitting the hadith v\-hick forbade its recording. Bearing all this in mind one arrives at the conclusion that the Prophet's disapproval of writing ahadith most probably meant the writing of- the Our'an and non-Qur'anic material on the sank shot be(• use that might have led to misunderstanding.
