PERCEPTIONS OF ISLAM IN EUROPEAN WRITINGS is part of the wider study of Islam and the West: a history of European, mainly French and English, intellectual responses to Islam from the seventeenth century onwards. It focuses on the nineteenth century. Studies on Islam and the West have so far tended to be dominated by nonMuslim writers. This study, therefore, attempts to put forward a scholarly, Muslim, point of view, on a subject which has acquired increasing importance in our time. Relying on primary European and Islamic source materials, it remains firmly committed to the notion of fidelity to European thought. It paves the way to a constructive dialogue between equals, Islam and the West. AHMAD GUNNY first joined the Civil Service in Mauritius. Posted to London, he served at the Mauritius High Commission as Second Secretary and later became First Secretary. Educated at Leeds, Oxford and London Universities, he was awarded a Ph.D in French, London. For many years he taught French at Liverpool University, becoming Reader there before being elected Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. In Oxford he gives Seminars on Islam and the West at Colleges of the University, OCIS and Maison Francaise. In its recital and observance of its commands lies deliverance from our worries. We must recite it with a resolve to gain Allah's pleasure and through that we will drive other advantages. We ma' perhaps also get any other objective through its recital but then we will not gain Allah's pleasure. Some of ur elders used its verses to solve ieir anxieties and illnesses and found it helpful. Then they passed on their eperiences to the masses for the good of the common Muslims. We must make these invocations only as proved and established remedies but not as bases of faith and conviction that this method of treatment is an objective of the Quran.

he 20th century, which we have just left behind us, was a century of war and conflict, leading to disasters, pain, massacres, poverty, and enormous destruction. Millions of people were killed, massacred, abandoned to hunger and death, and left without home or shelter, protection, or support. And all for nothing: in the name of serving deviant ideologies. On nearly every occasion there were despots' and dictators' signatures beneath all the suffering and disasters: Stalin, Lenin, Trotsky, Mao, Pol Pot, Hitler, Mussolini, Franco... For the simple reason that their ideologies were opposed to each other, these people dragged societies into conflict and turned brother against brother. Fascism and Communism come at the head of the ideologies that caused mankind to suffer those dark days. These are seen as enemies, as ideas that tried to destroy each other. GEORGE ORWELL famously wrote in his book, Animal Farm, that, `all are equal but some are more equal than others'. The question of political, racial and religious equality is an ongoing debate within the context of a modern secular nation-state like Britain. When national identity is constructed around specific ideas and notions of race and religion, multi-cultural diversity and religious pluralism are negated via exclusivity. As a result, any social entities existing outside the concepts of a very definite and exclusive national identity are treated as `other'. Muslims in Britain are often viewed in terms of `otherness'. They are also measured by their responses to their religious and national identities particularly when there is a clear contention resulting in a question of loyalty. `A true and faithful allegiance to the legitimate sovereign or government of one's country', would perhaps be an accurate description of `loyalty' within the context of citizenship and nationality. But for one to truly experience and manifest loyalty the feeling of inclusion and belonging must already be firmly established. Belonging would suggest that one is fully included in a specific member group, or in this case nation, and that the particular rights regarding individual inclusion within the member group are assigned.
